Planning a Colorado Family Vacation
Most American families have considered taking a Colorado Family vacation at some time or another, or have actually followed through and done. If you haven't done it, now is as good a time as any to follow through and finally do it. Colorado is one of the most beautiful states in America and anyone who has experienced a Colorado family vacation will testify to this fact. You have beautiful mountains capped in snow, valleys spotted with flowers and pristine lakes tucked away amongst the mountains. What a lot of people forget about is that Colorado also has recreational sand dunes in the south and dinosaur digs in the northwest part of the state.
One of our favorite places to take our Colorado family vacation is in the central part, in the mountains. We have spent several summers in Frisco, Colorado and thoroughly enjoyed our stay every time. Frisco is a little town just off I-80 that is only a few minutes drive from Copper Mountain.
In case you haven't heard of it, Copper Mountain, Colorado is one of the popular ski areas, however, in the summer it is a very popular place to play golf, frisbee golf, mountain ride, mountain climb, swim, etc. You name it and you can find something for your family to enjoy here.
Many families who plan a family vacation getaway to Colorado go for 1 of 2 things: skiing during the winter and hiking/camping during the summer. Well, you can find all this in and around Frisco, Colorado. The town is built to cater to tourists, so families have no problems finding lodging and food, and of course entertainment.
Here are some ideas if you plan to visit Frisco: vacation rentals
are fairly priced and easy to come by if you reserve your place in advance-expect to pay $750+ for a week in a house. For recreation, you can really write your own ticket on what you want to do. In Frisco, you are by Lake Dillon where you can go sailboating, skiing, or any other water activity you want, including fishing. You can also golf, play frisbee golf, go on numerous hiking trails, bike rides, rent ATV's and ride in the mountains, etc. You can take the short drive to Copper Mountain and participate in any of the many activities that are offered here. You can hook up with one of the local tour companies and go sky diving, air balloon rides, white water rafting or canoeing.
If you aren't interested in what Frisco has to offer, another place we highly recommend for your Colorado Family Vacation is Glenwood Springs, Colorado. This quaint little town is most well known for its massive
Hot Springs Pool
and Doc Holliday's grave. It is also the gateway to Aspen, sitting only 40 minutes drive from this famous ski resort. Be forwarned, however, that if you are staying here so that you can ski in Aspen, you may want to re-consider. We have found that you can ski for much less cost and on better routes than that which we found in Aspen. Personally, we think Copper Mountain is better. Aspen has basically been taken over by the ubber rich and therefore, they cater to this clientele. Back in Glenwood Springs you will find that there is a ton of activities to do as well. Besides all the winter sports that you can pretty much find everywhere in the Colorado Rockies, you can experience the Fairy Caves, Amusement Parks, and
Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.
Of course, your Colorado family vacation doesn't have to be limited to these locations, they are just our favorites. You can visit Colorado Springs and get a tour of the Air Force Academy or take the drive up to Pikes Peak and say you were on top of a 14er. You could visit Estes Park, Colorado and take in some awesome mountain scenery, some of the most beautiful in Colorado. Your family could take the historic train ride in
Leadville, Colorado
and get some great pictures of the two highest peaks in Colorado: Mt. Massive and
Mt. Elbert.
If your children are into dinosaurs (and what little boy isn't) you can stop in Canon City, Colorado and see the
most complete Stegosaurus in the world
and tour the museum.
Another classic place to visit on your Colorado family vacation getaway is the
Bishop Castle
located in Beulah, about 27 miles past Colorado City on HWY 165. This is truly a great place to spend a day, because castles never cease to evoke a sense of awe and wonder in kids and adults alike.

A Colorado family vacation has a little something for everyone and we suggest you take advantage of it and enjoy a family vacation that your family will not soon forget.
