Kauai Activities

If you are looking for the best Kauai activities or places to visit while staying on the island, we suggest you take a look at the following places:

Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge has a diverse collection of nesting birds and great lookouts over the ocean. During January-March, you will be able to see whales playing off the coastline here. You can visit the lighthouse, visitor center and look through one of many high powered binoculars at the birds, shoreline, and ocean. It will cost $3 a person or free if you have a National Parks Pass.

The Na Pali Coast is definately worth the drive north. Even if you only hike in 2 miles to the first river crossing, you will thoroughly enjoy the breath-taking scenery along this trail. If you are more adventurous, you can hike all 11 miles in to Kalalau Beach and camp for a couple nights. You will need to get a permit in advance, however. Click here if you plan to do so. Most pictures you will ever see of Kauai, will be pictures taken in or around the Na Pali coastline, so this is a must see.

The National Tropical Botanical Garden is also a must see. It will cost about $40 a person, but it is very easy to spend the whole day here, in fact, we did. Kids will love the guided tour and it will be extremely informative for all. The beauty of this garden is something you wil not soon forget. Bring your camera and take lots of pictures. You may find this a good place to take a family picture as well, since it so perfectly displays the beauty of Hawaii!

The Waimea Canyon is called

the "Grand Canyon of Pacific." It was aptly named by Mark Twain, and one visit to this canyon will help you understand why. It runs 10 miles long and is around 3600 feet deep! You will get a spectacular view down into Kalalau Valley from here.

The famous Wailua Falls is also a recommended place to visit. For those who remember the TV series Fantasy Island, you will instantly recognize this falls.

The last place we recommend you visit is the Spouting Horn. At this beach, you will witness the waves get pushed into a lava tube and then forced through a hole, making the water come shooting up like a geyser with a loud hissing sound. It really had a lot of similarities to Old Faithful in Yellowstone NP, except this happened every few seconds with the tide.
