Having fun on your Lake Huron family vacation

Taking a Lake Huron family vacation has become increasingly popular for escapees from the Detroit area, but now it is becoming more popular for the rest of the States. There are so many awesome and quaint places to visit along Lake Huron, that your family will not soon forget this family vacation!

One of the first places we suggest you visit on your Lake Huron family vacation is Tawas Bay. Largely considered one of the primo sailing areas in the U.S., you would do well to include this town in your travel plans. This beautiful town sits about 3 hours from the Detroit area and is a perfect place to rent a sailboat or hire a fishing guide to take you out on some of the most abundant schools of fish you can find. A limestone reef built in 1987, has done wonders towards making
this area a spectacular place to go fishing-even for the novice! Of course the sailing, as mentioned before is truly great too. If you plan to take your family vacation to Tawas Bay, consider visiting in June. The Tawas Point Celebration Days are full of children's activities and demonstrations. Another cool destination in Tawas is the Tawas Point Lighthouse. This historic building was built in 1876 and towers 70 feet over Lake Huron. Believe me, when we say your kids will love this view!

Another great little town to stop by on your Lake Huron family vacation is Lexington. This town offers a great downtown area that has something for everyone, even fudge shops to keep mom and the kids happy! For a great place to eat, we recommend Smackwater Jacks. This restaraunt offers gourment sandwiches and pizza, as well as some of the best soup and Focaccia bread you will ever eat. If you want your kids to experience a little fun, take them to the Lexington Music and Theatre Company and catch a play put on by local actors. If you plan to stay the night in Lexington, you can expect to pay around $100 a night if you rent a cabin.

Another absolute on your Lake Huron family vacation is Mackinac Island. Not only is Mackinac City a great destination, but getting there is what will make your family vacation so fun! The Mackinac Bridge is the world's longest suspension bridge between cable anchorages and covers 5 miles. The extraordinary feat of engineering that went into this bridge makes it a "must see" on your family vacation, and your kids will love driving on the bridge, too!

The last destination that we highly recommend is the town of Tobermory that sits on the Bruce Peninsula. This scenic town is actually going to take you into Canada, so you can say you went on an international Lake Huron family vacation! From Tobermory, you can rent a glass bottom boat or go sailing around the peninsula and take in the awesome rock formations that surround the lake. The beaches are quite fun here as well, and your children will be sure to enjoy exploring for sea life along the rocks and boulders that dot the beach areas. This area is actually reminiscent of the shores outside Ft. Bragg, CA.

If you are taking a Lake Huron family vacation that involves driving, camping and visiting the sites, we recommend you stop along the way at as many of the historic lighthouses you can. These towers are beautiful and offer great sight-seeing. Many of them are located by state parks, that offer campgrounds, which make for cheap lodging and relaxing campfires.

You will also notice that along most of the Lake Huron shoreline, the beaches have free parking and don't charge user's fees. Two of our favorite beaches are Sauble Beach and Station Beach in Kincardine. The water is shallow with a gradual slope, making this a perfect place to bring young children. If you stay until the evening, you will get to hear the Phantom Piper playing the bagpipes. The music makes the beach have a sense of mysticism about it.
