Jutting up from the valley, Shasta Dam creates an awesome spectacle.

The Three Shastas

The construction of Shasta Dam began in 1938 and was completed just 6 years later in 1944. The amount of concrete used to create Shasta Dam (6,270,000 cu yd.) is enough to lay a sidewalk to the moon and back. Shasta Dam stands at 602 ft. (183 m) and 3,460 ft. (1,055 m) long, making it the tallest dam in the United States and at 46 sq. miles (119 sq. km) in volume, it is the second largest dam in the United States.

Shasta Dam was designed to save water for the Sacramento valley, and also provide power and water for the general public.

Shasta Dam also provides tours, but you need to call ahead to make sure of the schedule. You can call (530)275-1554 for information.

When you visit Shasta Dam , be sure to take a picture of the Three Shastas: Shasta Dam, Shasta Lake, and Mt. Shasta. On a clear day, this can be a great picture. To get a clear day, the best time to see the three Shastas, you should go during the late spring or late fall. The air tends to be the clearest and the views are spectacular.

As mentioned above, you can take a tour of the dam. This is highly recommended and kids and adults alike will enjoy seeing the process that is involved in turning water into electricity. Shasta Dam also has a visitor's center that is a must to visit. This center gives a detailed photographic history of the construction and design of the dam. It is recommended that you visit the visitor center before you leave.
