Over 350 miles of shoreline along Shasta Lake await your exploration!
Upon the creation of
Shasta Dam
, the 46 square miles of water turned this lake into the largest lake in California.
During the summer vacationers flock to Shasta Lake so they can enjoy the many activities that the lake offers. The summer water temperatures average 77 degrees, drawing lovers of water sports and swimming alike.
For the truly adventurous family, you can take your mountain bikes across the dam and head 10 miles south on the river trail until it hooks into the paved section, turn around and take the strenuous trip back up to the lake; make sure you bring plenty of water and give yourself plenty of time. This ride, however, is a beautiful ride and follows the Sacramento river along an old railroad track (that has been torn up). You even get to go through an old tunnel.
If you plan to spend your day on the lake, make sure you bring plenty of liquids and sunscreen, for the heat and sun can be brutal during the summer months.
Remember to boat safe and refrain from consuming alcohol while operating a boat, the rangers are strict and have a zero tolerance policy.
For the family that wishes to go houseboating, Shasta Marina Resort offers competitive rates on well maintained houseboats.
For the family that wants to enjoy the non-water related activities of Shasta Lake, several scenic trails are ready to be explored. You can pick up a trail guide at the U.S. Forest Service Info Center, just off I-5 south of the lake exit. If you choose to take a scenic trail, you will may come across the variety of wildlife that inhabits the area around the lake. The lake helps support the largest population of bald eagles in California, as well as deer, elk, herons, black bears, and over 274 species of birds. Along with these activities you may be interested in boating over to
Shasta Caverns
and visiting some of the natural wonders that geology has to offer.
