Redding, CA is a recreational city and you can find many things to do if you are willing to get out. Chances are, that your family vacation getaway to Redding, will be in the summer, so we will focus on most of the events that happen in the summer, however, we will also bring up some winter events as well.

Starting around the beginning of June, downtown Redding will block off all the roads around the railroad tracks on Thursday for Marketfest. This fun event starts around 5 pm and runs into the evening. At Marketfest you can visit booths with foods and wares, listen to local bands play music, and mingle with the locals. This fun evening is relaxed and a great opportunity to listen to live music and eat great food. To get here, you will take Cypress Ave. west to Pine St., go right on the one way and then turn left on Placer. You will run right into it.

Waterworks Park is open all summer long and is a great place to beat the summer heat and let the kids enjoy the water and awesome slides. You can bring your own lunch and eat at one of the many picnic tables and tents provided. Your family can very easily spend a whole day at this great water park. To get here, you will take I-5 North to the HWY 299 exit and turn left (heading west). You will see the park on your right hand side.

If your family is into shopping, the Anderson Factory Outlets just off of I-5 at 1699 Hwy 273 in Anderson (10 miles south of Redding) and the Mt. Shasta Mall on Dana Drive in Redding (from I-5, take Cypress Ave. exit and head east to Hilltop Dr., drive north to Dana and turn left) offer tons of stores and shopping for even the most ardent teenager. Across from the Mt. Shasta Mall, you will see Discovery Village, the local college and teenage hangout. You will know why, when you see a Starbucks, Cold Stone Ice Cream and Jamba Juice all next to each other!

Another popular thing to do in Redding, is to spend time at the Redding Aquatic Center in Caldwell Park. This Olympic size pool has evening movies on a big screen throughout the summer. You need to call ahead to find out movie times and nights: 530-245-7247. Drive north on Court to intersection of Eureka Way (stop light with Walgreens on your right and Rite Aid on your left. Go through the intersection and keep going north down the hill. You will pass the River Trail entrance on your left. Keep driving over the bridge and take a right at the first stop sign. You will see all of Caldwell Park on your left side; park wherever you want and explore.

If you are interested in taking in a baseball game, Big League Dreams has games all summer long with local teams. You aren't limited to watching, however!
